Weekend Escape to Guimaraes

Last weekend was much needed. We visited a friend in her hometown, Guimaraes, about 30 minutes out of the city. BEAUTIFUL city, where the first king of Portugal was born andthe country was founded.

Primavera em Porto

Hey guys! Sorry for my absence the past few weeks. I know all my fans (my one fan... Russ Wakeham, you out there?) have been anxiously awaiting my next post.

The weather in Porto has been FABULOUS lately.  It makes me want to be anywhere, but inside. Damn the 40 hour work week. My past few weekends have been spent in this beautiful port city, a good portion of that due to my bank account bottoming near the double digits. Regardless, I spent ultimo fim de semana walking around the city, going to the beach and paintballing for the first time. It's hard to understand the rules of paintball when they are told to you in Portuguese, which makes me think I cheated the whole time.

Paintball at an abandoned mental asylum, kind of creepy.

A couple weeks ago, I got to pick up this cute face at the OPO airport.

I managed to get a week off of work and the two of us took advantage of every cheap flight Ryanair offered that week. Granada, again. Milan, Florence and Bologna. It was nice to have a little bit of home here with me in Porto. I will share more about our trips once I get the pictures!

J'adore Paris

Hi all! I just arrived back from Paris a few days ago. I was ABSOLUTELY AMAZED by the city. Paris was exactly as I envisioned it... The timeless architecture, the outdoor cafes, even the stuck up French with their permanent facial expression that looks like they're smelling s*&t.

Marieve and I decided to have a romantic weekend together in the city of love. We galavanted through just about everything Paris had to offer... We enjoyed the artistic talent of Montmartre, Walked along the classy promenade of Champs-Elysees, Saw the Arch of Triumph (you've seen one, you've seen them all and if you haven't seen one, this picture will suffice)

Were nearly runover by the terrible drivers in Plaza de la Concorde, Got frustratingly lost in the Louvre

Pretended to be intellectual Parisians in the Artcurial Auction House, Took pictures inside the Cathedral Notre-Dame... only to have them deleted by an employee since no cameras were allowed, Fell down a flight of stairs in the Luxembourg Gardens, Tried to sneak into the fashion house of Givenchy

Were hypnotized by the street-style of the city as it was Paris Fashion Week, and then there was an afternoon of drinking too much wine under the Eiffel Tower... a top favorite.

I Blame Ryanair Pt. 1

So I told you guys I would write about my travels thus far. Since arriving to Porto, I have only had the pleasure of enjoy my own town's nightlife near a handful of times. This is due to my obsessive compulsive addiction to buying flights via Ryanair. What I wanna know is...how the hell is anyone supposed to pass up a 4€ flight to Madrid? And WHY 4€?

I DO NOT UNDERSTAND Ryanair's business model, but I don't have to in order to fly on it :)

That said, my first destination was Madrid. I went to visit my lovely friend, Lauren Brasier, who happened to be hosting none other than Luis 'Quinto' Allende that very same weekend. Not only were these two a good cure for the homesickness I felt during my first weeks, but they made me completely forget I ever left home. If you could put the three 'classiest' people from Los Gatos in Madrid for the weekend, you would get two borderline blacked out nights, an overindulgent amount of platonic spooning, the unfinished, yet completely choreographed Madrid version of 'Barbara Streisand' and a newly developed radar for detecting compañeras/os... Thanks to Lauren and Quinto, I know where and how to find a hooker within minutes...

In between the drinking til 6 am, eating at every restaurant in Madrid and sleeping until 1pm, we managed to partake in some normal human activities.

Here is my only proof...

haha. Sorry for the short post. More to come!

Goodnight all. Beijinhos do Porto.

LONG OVERDUE!

Hey All-

This is me telling you I have finally arrived in Portugal. Although, I am a month late in doing so...

To start off, Porto (the city I am living in for those who don't know) is incredible! It's a northern portuguese city located on the water. They are known for their Port (I'm sure you could link that together). Most of you know that 'i have a boner for wine' as Nick would say, so you can imagine my excitement. There is a 3-mile stretch of wineries along the Rio Douro (Heee-yu Door-oo in Portuguese), which is about a 2 mile walk from my house. That said, I HATE to report to you that I have not been wine tasting since my arrival here... I have been busy. It's a tough life here, I have to travel and shit (DRAG). Actually, in all honesty, my job is much more intense than expected, so I swear I have been busy. Prior to my arrival, I assumed my job would be a bit of a joke (since I am being paid quase nada), yet, in fact, it is one of the more intense jobs I have carried. I recently moved to an AMAZING apartment in the center of Porto. I am near many bars, bakeries and shopping! Speaking of bakeries, they have been doing a number on my body. I am pretty sure I have gained a kilo or ten since my arrival. I will leave it up to my drug dealing friends to convert that into pounds, but for the rest of you, I refuse to divulge myself.

I have met some really cool people here. Most of the people I hang out with are interns in Porto. I have only met one American since being here, a graduate of CAL POLY, so I have one person to share my California lingo with. Everyone else I've met speaks more than a handful of languages, making Americans looks like ignorant idiots. When I go out (after a few drinks in), I pretend to have an accent so nobody knows I am American. I usually stick with the Spanish accent so if anyone calls my bluff I can say a few words to them in the language but it rarely works in my favor. My good friend here is actually a girl that I work with, Marieve, a French-Canadian. I call her Maminhas (little tits). She comes in a tiny package, but has A LOT to say, so we hit it off quite well. All in all, I am loving it here. I will keep you updated more frequently and will soon write about my adventures to Madrid, Covilhã and Lisbon!
